Biomass to energy plants - Comef

Our biomass to energy plants

Our biomass to energy plants respond to the most modern available technologies and guarantee high energy and environmental performances.

Our commitment is to reduce consumption, to reduce emissions, to limit environmental impacts and to maintain a high level of energy efficiency throughout the whole plant life.

ENERGY ENHANCEMENT

The energy enhancement of biomass

The biomass and the fuels derived from them emit in the atmosphere, during the combustion, a quantity of carbon dioxide corresponding to that previously absorbed by them during the growth process.

The use of biomass for energy purposes does not cause the release of new carbon dioxide, the main one responsible for the greenhouse effect, thus guaranteeing to this type of energy produced a considerable environmental value.

Among the solid biomass fuels treated in the Comef plants there are chips, stumps, refills, waste from the management of green and wood, from wood processing activities, from agricultural activities, agro-industry, foodstuffs of cereals, legumes, rice, olives, hay and straw.

GENERATION & COGENERATION

Generation and cogeneration

Our plants transform the biomass chemical energy into thermal energy and therefore into electric energy; the process is called ‘generation’. In our systems the residual heat of this process is still recovered, the hot water started up in pipes that transport it to the utilities for civil or industrial heating and / or cooling uses; the process is called ‘cogeneration’ (which simultaneously produces electric energy and heat) or ‘trigeneration’ (which simultaneously produces electric energy, heat and cooling energy) which gives rise to district heating and/or district heating-cooling systems.
District heating systems from cogeneration plants enable greatest global energy efficiency to be achieved; in fact, the power plant is able to produce electric energy and recover at the same time the thermal energy released in the thermodynamic process.
